Meet our flock

We have 10 Red-Bellieds.

Our two pets are a male named Nemo, and a female named Kapiolani. Nemo is one of my own chicks that hatched here at Sassicat Aviary in October 2003. He was injured in the nest box and so has no toes on either foot. Kapiolani was purchased as part of a bonded pair, but after her post purchase exam, we found that she has kidney disease. We seperated her from her previous mate. We were very pleased to find that she is quite tame and very lovable.

Our breeder pairs are: (females listed first)

  • Keikki Nani & Makani Manu
  • Kaimana & Akala
  • Kamele & Kamehameha
  • Leilani & Liholiho

We also have three Brown Headed Parrots.

Kalenia is a female. She was purchased when she was 3 months old. We had hoped that she would be a future breeder. She had other plans however and wants to stay a pet. She never took one look at the male we had in a cage next to her in three years. We finally found another breeder that needed a male so he now has a mate. Kalenia will stay our sweet lovable pet.

Our breeder pair of Brown Headed Parrots is Kiana & Konani.

Our remaining flock consists of our female Senegal Parrot, Neikko; our Sun Conure, Sunnie; and our Blue & Gold Macaw, Cubbie.

How we named our flock

Keikki Nani is Hawaiian for Pretty Baby. When my parents purchased their Umbrella cockatoo, they named her Tori which meant bird in Japanese. I have always been one that likes unique names for pets, not human names. So when I got my first Red-Bellied girl, we went to the library and looked up all sorts of words in foreign language dictionaries. I finally settled on Keikki Nani. I quickly fell in love with the Hawaiian language, so then most of our future birds were all named with Hawaiian names also.

Cubbie came next. He is a Blue and Gold Macaw. He was my wedding gift to Ken, so Ken got to name him. Ken was a Boy Scout Leader and the Cub Scouts colors are Blue and Gold. Also, Ken is a Chicago Cubs fan, so he named his baby Cubbie.

Neikko came next. My step son had accidently killed my cockatiel, so to show him I didn't blame him and was not angry with him, I allowed him to name our new Senegal. I really wanted my step son to feel welcome in my home and to be a part of our lives entirely. He came up with the name Neikko and I just spellied it so that it had a sort of Hawaiian flare.

Sunnie is a male Sun Conure. In the store he really took to Ken. We bought him and so Ken was allowed to name him, and of course Ken just had to name him Sunnie. (how original hehehehe)

Makani was next. He is Keikki's mate. His full name is Makani Manu which is Bird Wind.

Kaimana and Akala were purchased as a proven pair. Their names mean Diamond and Raspberry

Kapiolani and Kamehameha were purchased as a bonded pair. When I first saw them I remarked that they stood with a regal look about them. When I couldn't decide on a descriptive name, Ken suggested we name them after the first King of the Hawaiian dynasty, thus Kamehameha, which means The Lonely One. Kapiolani was one of King Kamehameha's wives.

Leilani and Liholiho were purchased very young, she was 6 months old and he was 4 months old. We picked them both up on the same day. Leilani means Heavenly Flower, and that was the name of the sales lady who sold me Ken's Mustang when I bougth it for him for his birthday. Liholiho is the second king of the Hawaiian dynasty and it means The Fiery One.

Konani means Bright. He has this one yellow feather in the middle of his head that still after 4 years has not gone away.

Kalenia is a pet term for Greenie. Brown Heads are the most gorgeous color of green so I felt it fit.

Kiana means Moon Goddess. I was running out of words that had a descriptive meaning and also is easy to say or sounded good to my ears, or did not sound too much like names we already had.

Nemo was named after the movie Finding Nemo. When he hatched his parents injured him and he has no toes and also is missing half of his left wing. Because of the stunted wing, my co-work said he made her think of Nemo in the movie because he had a broken fin. I liked the sound of the name so we gave it to my precious baby.

Kamele was paired with Kamehameha after we had to seperate him from Kapiolani. Kamele means Melody. I was hoping they would make beautiful music together as the saying goes.
